As of this writing there is a needless level of complexity between the user and X3D in the form of an plug-in, even of that plug-in is the Adobe Flash. The most important statement that this site can make is that for X3D to become a common web based technology it needs to be integrated into the browser, like JavaScript/ECMAScript is.
The greatest thing since packaged sliced bread? Sliced bread was only practical after bread wrapping machines were invented. Sliced bread would not have been popular if it resulted in stale or moldy bread slices. The incredible work done on X3D deserves a delivery system so it can be coded outside an embedded rectangle. Embedded media, especialy X3D and MPEG4, are ambiguous enough to be a part of the official web browser standard.
X3D plug-ins are keeping X3D from being used as a real time solution. Microsoft damaged Java by not providing a full implementation of Java in XP, and is doing the same to OpenGL by making it emulated by new versions of Direct-X. X3D needs to be integrated into browser standards.
